“It is remaining penny smart and dollar silly,” community economist David Goetsch reported. “In the shorter phrase, a minimal wage hike will make staff members pleased. In the extensive phrase, they’ll be quite unhappy.”

Autumn Johnson serves lunch to John Blanchard (left) and Dewey Roberts on the deck at Harbor Docks restaurant in Destin on Thursday. Tipped employees like Johnson are typically the only restaurant workers who make less than the current minimum wage of $8.56 per hour. Tipped employees have a tip credit of about $3, which reduces their hourly wage to take into account the money they receive from customer tips.

The minimum amount wage was produced as a way to give men and women a start off in company, to understand abilities and move on to a new job, Goetsch stated. He said he fears a $15 an hour bare minimum wage will discourage personnel from searching for to far better by themselves.

“We’re creating a total modern society of folks on the lookout at minimum wage positions as a way to make a dwelling for the relaxation of their lifetime,” he reported. “It is not a clever matter.”
